I spend an awful lot of time answering questions from Bloggers, some who have been at it for years and others who are just getting started. I love it, I love being able to help creators find their niche and grow. I’m one of those “your success is my success” kind of nerds. Which I guess, is pretty good.
In the last 2 or 3 months, I have been asked “what should I blog about?” at least 15 times. It’s really stuck with me. When I first started my blogging journey I had no idea of what to write about. I just liked to write. But now, 7+ years later, I have a niche and goals for my blog. Don’t worry if it doesn’t come to you right away.
So, here are a few ways to decide on what you should blog about.

Think about what you are passionate about
This one is probably the easiest method. I’m really passionate about my career, I can and will talk about SEO, Marketing and Blogging for hours. So that makes sense for me to blog about it. I don’t get bored of this subject – and that is what is important. If you write about something you love the words just come naturally.
Think about what you love, is it; macrame, make up, caring for a budgie, skiing, supporting families through bereavement, baking cake that look like other things – whatever it is! If you enjoy it, can you write about it?
Not everyone has a passion, which is totally normal. So don’t feel like you can’t start a blog because you are not passionate about anything. You might find your niche once you start, or in a years time.
What do you like to read online?
Do you read a lot of blogs? If you do, take note of the posts you enjoy. When you have time sit down and think about those posts. What were they about? Why did you enjoy them so much? Is this something you could write about?
Taking time to think about what you enjoy could really open doors for you creatively.
Do you have a skill you can share?
Do you have a skill or specific knowledge that you can share? These always make a fantastic blog in my opinion. Going back to me being passionate about my career, I’ve very fortunate of having a skill that people are constantly wanting to learn.
A really wise person called Upasna once tweeted:
“There is always someone who will know more than, and there is always someone who will know less. This means there is always an opportunity for you to learn and to teach”.

Write for you
I love blogs where their writers write for them. There is a whole different level of passion and individuality from those who write for themselves. They are not focused on growing their platform, they are writing because they love to write. It is beautiful to see.
Write what you’d want to see on the internet or what is important to your life at the time.
- Are you buying a house? Write about the steps you take?
- Had a baby? Talk about the changes in your life since becoming a parent.
- Taking a make up artistry course? Show your growth.
- Downloaded 100 books on your kindle? Review and recommend them.
There is no end or limit to what you can write about when you are your audience.
Do you really want to start a blog?
So you want to start a blog, but don’t know what to blog about? Why do you want to start a blog?
Normally my first response would be to delve into why someone wants to start a blog. I don’t think people realise the hard work that goes into a blog. When I get this I always advise them to start out on a free platform and take some time to figure out if blogging is for them.
Finding your niche is just a small amount of the process. Once you have a niche you need to then start thinking about your content, thinking about how much or how often you will be able to write.
I’ve had the odd occasion where someone didn’t actually want to start a blog, but they wanted to go down the influencer path and social media was what they wanted. I fully support them in that, and I’m so glad they decided to start out on free platforms so they could decide on what works for them.
You’ve just got to make sure you have a niche that works for you.
Conclusion
Blogging can be as simple or as complex as you want to make it. You don’t need to set a specific niche for your blog, but it does help with marketing yourself.
Whatever you chose to blog about, I promise you, you are doing great. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your blog won’t be either.
